Scent Discrimination

Scent discrimination is a low-impact activity that is fun for dogs of all ages, breeds and fitness levels.

Introducing a dog to scent discrimination begins with confidence building exercises.  Initially a variety of containers are set out for the dog and the either food or, for toy motivated dogs, fun toys are hidden in a few of the containers and the dog is encouraged to stay in the search area and to search for the rewards in the containers.   As the dog gains skill and confidence, the rewards are placed in spots in the search area where the dog has to look up to find the reward or to work to open a container to get the reward. The location of the search area is changed regularly so the dog learns to search in a variety of locations.  When the dog is confidently searching for food or toys, the rewards are paired with a certain odor and the dog learns to associate that odor with the reward.
